What’s a standing desk?

With a height-adjustable standing desk, you can easily switch positions between sitting and standing throughout your day – for greater comfort and productivity.

Why do you need a standing desk?

We live in a world of hybrid work. And we’ve abruptly force-fit that work into our homes, leaving us with makeshift spaces that never feel quite as energizing as the office, or as comfortable as home. An electric standing desk can:

  • Give your physical and mental well-being a lift

With the flexibility to change positions throughout the day, you’ll be taking a stand against the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and be able to see things from an elevated perspective.

  • Adapt to whatever you’re doing

Whether you’re hard at work, taking some much-needed me time, or giving the kids a space for homework, a height-adjustable standing desk can adapt to your home life as well as your work life .

  • Give your employees a productive working environment

For your employees to be at their best, they need to feel at their best, wherever they’re working from. A standing desk gives them a comfortable work environment that helps them meet their full potential.

What to consider when shopping for a standing desk

Stability

Using a desk that wobbles as you work can be frustrating. Some standing desks that are on the maximum height setting can wobble when typing, moving the mouse or leaning on the desk edge. A premium MotionFurni standing desk, like the AS2, can give you a stable foundation for your work that you can rely on, without wobbling on the highest setting, the lowest setting, or anywhere in between.

Durability

When you invest in a height-adjustable standing desk, you’ll want one that lasts. So, it’s wise to invest in a high-quality desk that can support you for years to come, which means it’ll be worth every penny. All MotionFurni desks are built to last. In fact, we’re so confident in their quality that desks like the AS2 come with a 10 year warranty.

Height range

How tall are you? Different electric standing desks can reach different heights. It’s helpful to measure what your ideal height is for working standing up, as well as sitting down. Whether you’re sitting or standing, and for the greatest comfort and support, your desk should reach just under your elbows when you’re using the keyboard.

Desk depth

Desk depth is the distance between the front and the back of the desk. How much space do you need to work with? If you’re using a computer on the desk, how far away do you want the monitor from you? Finding your ideal monitor distance can help reduce eye strain.

Weight capacity

If you need a lot of equipment in your workspace, you need a desk that can take the weight of it all. Different desks actually have different weight capacities. For example, the BK2 Odin can hold up to 660 lbs for the heaviest of workloads. So, it’s a good idea to think about how much weight capacity you need for your work, or hobbies.

Adjustment speed

If you want to quickly adjust from sitting to standing, you’ll want a faster adjustment speed. But you might also be comfortable with a slower adjustment speed to give you a break while you’re switching positions. Different models of height-adjustable standing desks come with different motors which adjust at different speeds.

Noise

The noise of a motor for adjusting the level of an electric standing desk is small. But different motors can have varying levels of noise. If you want a completely silent working environment, you’ll want one of the quieter motors like the BK3.

Desktop material

You can choose between a range of different desktop surfaces, including: laminated, fiberboard, solid wood, bamboo, and glass. At MotionFurni, we use desktop materials that meet the highest E0 environmental protection standard, so you can rest easy knowing that they’re planet-friendly and safe.

Safety features

Protect your children’s tiny fingers with a child-lock safety feature, or shield your equipment from damage with a standing desk that comes with an anti-collision feature.

You can choose between a single motor or a Dual-motor on a MotionFurni standing desk. A single motor is perfect for a lightweight setup, and adjusts the height easily. A Dual-motor gives you better performance with two powerful motors on each side of the desk. It can handle heavier equipment, adjusts quickly and has greater stability.
A T-frame standing desk has the legs in the middle of the desk, centered on the feet, giving them that T shape for greater stability. A C-frame desk has legs at the back of the desk, at the end of the feet, which gives you more leg room as well as space for a cabinet, or a computer case. A semi-C frame standing desk means that the desk legs are positioned slightly towards the back of the desk, so you have both stability and extra space – for legroom or extra storage.
Our standing desks come with 2-stage or 3-stage legs. 2-stage legs are perfect if you’re 5 '10’’ (178 cm) or less in height. If you’re taller than that, we’d recommend 3-stage legs. The 3-stage legs are also more stable at the highest setting.

How to use a standing desk properly

Height adjustment
To find your ideal desk height when standing (or sitting), the desk should be high enough to reach just under your elbows while you’re using the keyboard. Your eyes should also be level with the top third of the computer monitor; this will help you find the perfect height, and protect you from eye strain.
How long should you stand for?
Change positions from sitting to standing every 30-60 minutes. Generally, it’s recommended that you stand for 30 minutes after an hour of sitting. It’s also helpful to move around regularly, so you don’t tense up when standing.
